The primary function of St. Peter Catholic School athletics is the development of student-athletes who display the Christian qualities of good sportsmanship and fair play in every aspect of life. To remember this context for which we play and to build a habit of prayer, all teams will recite St. Peter Catholic School Athletics Prayer before any competition.
Athletics:
St. Peter Catholic School participates in a variety of sports in two different leagues. The Northshore Independent Athletic League (NIAL) is a West St. Tammany based league made up of non-public schools and is open to 4th - 8th grade students.NIAL includes junior varsity and varsity competitions for cross-country, track, and golf.
St. Peter also plays in the Catholic Schools Athletic League (CSAL). The CSAL divides their junior varsity and varsity based on age. A student may participate in the junior varsity division if they are in sixth grade and meet the age requirements set forth by the CSAL before September 1st of the present school year. Senior varsity will be the seventh grade based upon the same guidelines.
5th Grade – The focus will be developmental. We will keep as many student-athletics as we can supervise. A 3-to-1 ratio of training to games is expected but depends on the availability.
6th and 7th Grades – Teams will be formed through tryouts. We want to continue providing more training than games.
It is our hope that every student has an opportunity to play on our teams. However, in some cases, cuts may be made. If a student made the team last year, it does not guarantee them a spot on the team this year. It is never an easy decision to cut a student from any team and that is left up to the coach’s discretion.
It is preferable to have faculty members as coaches, but that is not always possible and St. Peter Catholic School is blessed to have so many willing and competent parents to coach. Coaches must keep in mind that instilling a Christian attitude, teamwork, and sportsmanship are more important than winning. If a coach does not display the proper Christian attitude and sportsmanship during practice or a game, or if that coach knowingly bends or breaks the rules of the league, the administration reserves the right to remove the coach depending on the severity of the infraction.
Cross Country will have tryouts. After the team is chosen, we will distribute participation forms and collect fees.
Participants should have running shoes and a water bottle. Face masks are required during changing and until the start of actual training. They will be dismissed from their classes on training days at 2:50. We will train two days per week.
Volleyball will form Varsity and Junior Varsity teams from interested 5th - 7th grade girls. The teams will play home and away matches.
Flag football will have teams in JV2 (5th grade), JV1 (6th grade) and Varsity (7th grade).
